Our Story & History

From Naples to San Jose

Our family name, DiNapoli, literally translates to "of Naples,” and it is in this Italian countryside that our ancestors first tried their hands at growing the highly-coveted San Marzano variety. It turns out, canning was always in the cards for DiNapoli family, even after our Great Grandfather Rocco made the voyage from Naples to the United States, planting the family roots firmly in San Jose, California.

Our first incarnation of a tomato canning business came to life in 1938 when Rocco’s son Frank DiNapoli purchased a defunct cannery in Santa Clara, California, naming it Sun Garden Packing. There, Grandpa Frank built a successful business out of canning tomatoes, peaches and fruit cocktail, most notably sustaining soldiers and naval ships through WWII. Frank was succeeded by his son Richard in 1975, who continued to grow the flourishing family business until Rob DiNapoli, our current President, took over in 1993. By then, Silicon Valley was in full boom. Canneries were either relocating or selling and Rob followed suit. Though it marked the end of an era, the sale of Sun Garden made way for a new beginning for the DiNapoli family, when Rob created his namesake brand of tomatoes with DiNapoli Family Foods.

Today, we continue to grow our century’s-old DiNapoli family tradition, and San Marzano-Style tomatoes have never been more relevant. With over 80 years of canning under our belts, our multi-generational experience has led to incredible partnerships, such as that with James Beard Award-Winning Chef Chris Bianco. Together Rob DiNapoli and Chef Bianco have created Bianco DiNapoli Organic Tomatoes, a brand that has been eagerly and overwhelmingly embraced by foodie and pizza culture of Pizzeria Chefs and consumers alike.

We couldn’t be more proud of our family heritage as we look forward to the future. Il meglio deve ancora venire. The best is yet to come.

We also commit the pride of our ancestors to DiNapoli Tomato Sauces

When we talk about pride, we mean that we bring the highest quality and reliability to everything we do. The quality of our sauces is measured by taste, color, and consistency. This process begins with Pomodori Scelti (tomato collection). We ripen the tomatoes on the vine in the fields of California’s Central Valley, and we pack them fresh for our sauces every time.

And we mean it when we use the word ‘fresh.’ Newly harvested tomatoes are rushed to the cannery and processed within hours of being picked from the vine. We can maintain an extra thick texture and the natural fresh taste of the tomato’s flavor and color. Every can is ensured fresh by hand-testing in our specialized lab before being sent to you. With over 80 years of practice, we have refined this process down to the finest detail—ensuring the highest quality tomato for your sauces. Our ancestral pride and Italian heritage shine through in every can that arrives at your favorite restaurant or personal kitchen.
